Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance:Review

Ok, here we are with one rebuild movie down which means it is time for  It is the second of four films released in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy based on the original anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. ( light spoilers ahead)

Visuals-

The visuals caused a bit of controversy when the movie was released, and well to be honest it was rightfully so. The movie moreso than many other animated films integrated CG with the normal style animation, this is of course just like in 99.8% cases is a bt awkward and jarring due to the conflicting styles. Luckily you can quickly get used to it though and it by no means ruins the visual experience of the movie.

Unlike the other movie this one takes some larger departures in terms of visual design as well, and sadly the new departures kinda suck, but that is not to say they are all bad.  One thing that is a positive improvement is the tech and background machinery, they move much better and are very well designed . Sadly the other changes do detract from the visuals pretty harshly, the new characters and outift redesigns are pretty poorly done and just don’t match well and also detract from the seriousness of the events that are transpiring in the movie its self.

In the end the visuals while being disappointing are still serviceable and with a few insanely impressive scenes still manages to leave mix feelings. The visuals are no doubt a point that many will disagree on though.

Story-

Much like the visuals the story is a bit different than the previous series, but unlike the last movie this one takes much larger departures from the original, within this movie new characters are introduced, but sadly they add nothing positive to the movie and are actually really obnoxious.tumblr_n60c2hSIsA1rowohoo2_r1_500

Oddly enough with all the changes, none of them are really positive. While the changes are by no means a good decision they do also lead to some interesting theories which I will not state due to wanting others to make their own opinions on whats going down.

But do not fret! Despite my many issues with the movie I did still enjoy it quite a bit, as with the other Evangelion projects the pacing is pretty dang good and you don’t ever really feel like things are just dragging on like many movies do. Not to mention the actual plot itself is still completely insane and gets all those wheels in your head turning like mad trying to figure out how all these “changes” are really fitting into this odd rebuilding of Evangelion. In short the movie story while flawed is still interesting and worth the time.

In the end-

After all is said and done, some of the movie left a bad taste in my mouth, even with that I still found myself really wanting to see the next installment pretty badly. So, I guess you could say that the movie really is worth watching, while the story falls a bit below the standards that Evangelion previously set, the action scenes are still very well done and some of the visuals are simply amazing and will leave a great lasting impression despite the flaws. So just watch it.
