Ever since the announcement of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, a small group of fans have been desperate to convince the world that the game is still turn based. While there was certainly  words spoke by Developers that made it clear it is an action game-

“for the remake we’re proceeding toward an action-heavy style. Of course, we’ve added systems that future fans will be able to enjoy, so people who are bad at action-style battles, please don’t worry. For those who excel at action-style battles, we’re working to make this a system that’s different than what you’ve used before and can still enjoy”

Even after this many still insisted it would be turn based. Then came the Monaco Anime Game International Conferences 2017, in which we were gave two new pictures.  With this the Turn based theories were revived. The theories are now dead, as Tetsuya Nomura has came out to clarify that the game is indeed action based. You can see the quote below. Translated from Gematsu

“Because there was an imperfection in the interpretation of an interview we did at the site [of MAGIC 2017], I will explain here.

“Battles are not command-based, they’re action-based. Regarding cover actions, there are places where they can be done on the map, but they are not required. Because it’s seamless, I showed that there can be actions in response to various scenes.

“The Guard Scorpion battle has map destruction and a great number of attacks that weren’t in the original, so it has become a significantly flashy battle. If you look closely, I think that you can see that there are a number of missiles are coming down.”

And there we have it. If you are interested in how the combat is, feel free to check out our analysis here.
